Great Shape. Here is an old Bosch ZE1 one cylinder magneto. It seems to be in great shape and it makes a really hot spark. The bearings are nice and tight and the mag turns over smoothly.

They were well made and had many similarities to products made in the German werks in Stuttgart. Craftsmanship was a bit more utilitarian in appearance. Here is a postcard showing the modern and spacious Bosch magneto Company in Springfield, Mass before WW1, probably or Note the early company logo. The site of the factory resembled a college campus. Each employee had their own name badge that was signed, dated and embossed and specified when the associate was allowed in a building and which department and building they were permitted to enter.

This invention concerns an ignition system for an internal combustion engine of the kind powered by a magneto generator that does not require the interposition of a storage battery in the system and incorporates engine speed limiting by intermittent suppression of ignition. A known system of this type is disclosed in German patent publication DE-OS 27 51 in which two monostable multivibrator circuits, commonly referred for short as “monoflops”, connected one behind the other, are utilized for engine speed limiting.
The output of the last monoflop is connected, along with the output of an electronic control apparatus for ignition timing, to the control input of an interruptor switch through an AND-gate. When the maximum permissible engine speed is overstepped, the AND condition of the gate is no longer satisfied and ignition is thereby suppressed.
For repetitively turning on the monoflops and triggering the control apparatus, a separate control transducer is provided that is driven by the engine, and a voltage supply separate therefrom is necessary for energizing the ignition system.

Production of the 3 horsepower type ‘M’ engines began in and continued through the Great Depression until see figure The very first few 3 horsepower ‘M’s used only one pushrod. Both exhaust valve and ignitor were operated by this single pushrod, which was quickly discontinued. The two push rod version was then adopted. It was the same in every way as the magneto used on the 1 horsepower ‘M’ except for the number of teeth on the gear. Location of the drive gear was also within the crankcase.
The engine was only offered in the kerosene version unlike the 1 horsepower. Carburation consisted of the two needle valve unit, one for fuel on the right and water on the left. It operated almost in the same way as the 1 horsepower engine. As with the 1 horsepower ‘M’ the 3 horsepower underwent similar changes. International offered the high tension American Bosch magneto, but only of these were built with this option between the years and White metal was used instead of cast iron for the fuel pump and the needle valve heads.

I’m thinking mfg. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3. With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well.
Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that’s where life is, it’s not in the past, but romancing the past, that’s the present if you’re living it.
